Camping Cuisine

I may have lied when I said ATVs were the best part of camping. In truth, it's probably a toss up between ATVs and cooking outdoors like Laura Ingalls did. Do you think Laura had a pie iron? If not, it's possible that for once I've beat that prairie chica out when it comes to good times over the hot coals.

My obsession over this trip was pie irons. Those suckers can cook everything....like chemically laden but fabulous smelling cinnamon rolls.

Why is it though that they are sized for white Wonder bread? Trying to stick whole wheat in there was an adventure in and of itself. (Actually I'm just being dramatic because while I love crusty fresh bread, I still cut the crusts off of sandwich bread. Because I can and yes, I am fully aware that there are children starving in Africa.)

Some of those tubey can croissant things that scare me death to open (you know those Pillsbury cans--they are lethal at times) and a bit of cinnamon apples and you have campfire pies. That's just fun even if you end up picking off the outside and throwing it in the fire.

But alas, while I did contemplate how to create a frittata in the irons, I couldn't seem to figure out how to cook fish and veggies in them. You can't win them all.

  2. Wow, that thing is awesome! I'm really not a nature-girl, but I just wanna hike out to the woods JUST to be able to use that stuff! Looks like so much fun!

  4. That is one cool tool. Here is where we differ, though. I love being outdoors, in fact, I could stay outside the entire day. But, sleeping outside...not so much! I love my own bed and having a shower every morning. Still, the food looks amazing.
